People often mix up two very different things: free vehicle schemes and purchase subsidies. Knowing the difference saves time and protects you from false promises.
What is a free scooty scheme?
A state government gives a vehicle, or a direct benefit, to eligible students without asking them to buy it at the full price. Merit, category and domicile conditions usually apply, and there are limited seats or a limited budget.
What is an electric scooter subsidy?
Here you still buy the vehicle, but central or state incentives reduce its price. The incentive depends on the vehicle model, registration and the rules in force at the time of purchase, not on a student’s marks. Electric mobility programmes such as the central PM E-DRIVE scheme have supported electric two-wheelers, but their coverage and dates change, so check current status on official sites.

Quick comparison
| Point | Free scooty scheme | EV subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets it | Selected students | Any eligible buyer |
| Cost to you | Low or none | Reduced price |
| Based on | Marks, category, domicile | Vehicle model and rules |
| Where to apply | Education or welfare portal | Dealer or transport portal |
Which one should you choose?
Check both. A student who does not qualify for a free scheme may still benefit from an EV subsidy through an authorised dealer. Likewise, getting a free scooty does not stop you from reading about other support available in your state.
Things to confirm before you buy
- Whether the incentive is currently open
- Whether the model you want is eligible
- How the benefit is given: discount at purchase or bank transfer
- Any limit on the number of beneficiaries
Do not pay a booking amount to any person who promises a ‘free scooty with subsidy’ without showing an official order.
